Kerr too hot to handle in Monaghan tour de force
Monaghan 2-20 Fermanagh 0-11
MONAGHAN overwhelmed Fermanagh at Brewster Park, where 10 of the visitors got on the scoresheet.
Christopher McGuinness scored his side's second goal with five minutes to play, but, by that stage, the game was long over. Fermanagh now face into a league campaign with some degree of trepidation, while Monaghan will be looking to improve on a brilliant 2013.
Monaghan were six up at the break and were good value for the lead. They had top performers all over the pitch and, in the forward line, they proved particularly hot to handle. Thomas Kerr landed four points, three from play and was a constant menace while Dermot Malone, at right corner-forward, was nimble and economical, landing two points for the visitors.
At the other end, it was left to the Quigley brothers, Seamus and Sean to carry the bulk of the threat and the Roslea siblings accounted for six points in the first half, with the scores from play all of the highest quality.
The all-important goal came from Shane Carey, who did well to collect before slipping past his marker and sliding the ball into the corner of the net. Monaghan held the sway at the middle of the field for most of the first half and from this platform they dominated proceedings.
The second half was all again Monaghan as the home side were reduced to scoring from frees, with a couple of those awarded of the soft variety. In truth, the whistle could not come quick enough for Pete McGrath and his Fermanagh charges.
