Kavanagh steers Carlow to victory
Carlow 1-14 Westmeath 1-12
Carlow advanced to the knockout stages with a narrow, but deserved, win in Mullingar on Saturday.
They were three points to the good, 0-4 to 0-1, within six minutes and were never headed thereafter and led at the break 0-10 to 0-5.
Westmeath were just a point in arrears (0-10 to 0-9) when Dion Wall got in for a soft goal for Carlow in the 39th minute.
However, Ciaran Doyle soon cancelled this out after being well set up by Niall O'Brien, who levelled the game with a free.
A brace of points apiece from Marty Kavanagh and Pete Shaw put Carlow four points up with 10 minutes left.
Late points from Killian Doyle and O'Brien were not enough for Westmeath, who now exit the championship.
