Jude's to toast sevens milestone

ONE of the significant improvements in the All-Ireland club championships was the addition of the junior and intermediate grades some years ago.

It gave players below senior level a chance to test themselves against their counterparts from other counties; it's proved a huge success.

Dublin club St Jude's Templeogue spotted that gap at seven-a-side level much earlier, launching the junior sevens for pre-All-Ireland final Saturday. The event celebrates its 21st anniversary this year and after a successful hurling competition 12 days ago, the focus will be on the football equivalent this Saturday.

Twenty county junior champions from last year will compete in the Bord Gais Energy-sponsored event.

It's a big occasion for St Jude's who are, of course, represented on Dublin's panel by Kevin McManamon. The action gets under way in Tymon Park (11.0), where St John's (Down) will be defending their title.
