Joyce inspires Clonbur rally

Galway champions Clonbur claimed the Connacht junior title after a titanic struggle with Mayo champions Islandeady at McHale Park, Castlebar yesterday.

The game was delicately poised at 0-9 apiece with four minutes remaining, but Clonbur dug out the winning scores from an Eoin Joyce free and a fisted point from the influential Pat Lambe in injury-time.

The free-taking of Danny McGowan proved crucial in the first half and it was the last of his four frees that gave Islandeady a one-point lead at the break, 0-6-to 0-5.

But Clonbur relied on their lethal corner-forward Joyce, who kicked four from play, while two from Lambe saw Clonbur lead by two at one stage in the match.

Islandeady came back to retrieve a lead they held for just a minute when Brian McCormack kicked the opening score of the match on 10 minutes. Clonbur enjoyed a dominant 10-minute period in the second half to go two points clear.

Islandeady battled back with points from Danny McGowan and Brendan Gibbons to level the game, but Clonbur dug deep to pull out the winning scores, the superb Joyce -- the son of Galway legend Stephen -- scoring seven points on the day.
