An impressive Mayo side registered a facile victory over a disappointing Leitrim in a one-sided encounter at Ballinamore yesterday.
Although Leitrim opened the scoring with a Shane Mallon point from play after two minutes, two Ethan Henry points followed by further scores from Ciarán Moylett and Aidan Cosgrove had Mayo in front by the 13th minute.
Two Barry McWeeney pointed frees for Leitrim reduced the arrears but points from play by Paddy Heneghan and Emmet Murphy extended the Mayo lead.
The home side kept in touch with another McWeeney point from play seven minutes from half-time, but a Frank Irwin pointed free followed by a Rory Morrin point from play gave Mayo 0-8 to 0-4 lead at the break.
An early exchange of points between the sides gave little indication of what was to come as Mayo completely dominated the second period, scoring eight points without reply.
With the game effectively over as a contest by the end of the third quarter, Leitrim's only other point of the half came from Barry McWeeney five minutes from time.
It was a reflection of Leitrim's ineffectiveness against a strong Mayo side. Man of the match Irwin added to Leitrim's woes with a well-taken goal in the final minute.
