Injury woe for Kelly

Former Laois football All Star Tom Kelly might never play again after breaking a bone in his neck playing for St Joseph's last Sunday.

Kelly picked up the injury in the ACFL Division 1 game against Arles-Killeen after a heavy challenge and scans showed he broke one vertebrae and fractured two more.

He was expected to be released from hospital in Tullamore yesterday but he could be in a neck brace for up to eight weeks and won't be able to work (he's a carpenter) for some time.

According to sources, the initial prognosis was that he was lucky the injury wasn't worse but Kelly was still in considerable pain yesterday.

Kelly won an All Star in 2003 after excelling in Laois' Leinster-winning campaign and was also selected on the Irish International Rules team for that year's trip. He won eight international caps and twice travelled Down Under, where he was Ireland's player of the series in 2005.
