Adrian Murrihy was injured in the process of scoring a brilliant early goal for Clare at the Gaelic Grounds, where he brushed past several defenders in a 30-yard surge before blasting the ball into the net.
Murrihy was forced to retire, but his score in the eighth minute proved to be the difference between the teams.
After Clare had raced into a 1-2 to 0-0 lead, Eoin O'Donnell settled Limerick's nerves with a great point and the Banner men's lead was down to just a point, 1-4 to 0-6, at the break.
Clare dominated midfield thanks to a great display by Conor Cleary, who put over three points from play and created several other scores.
Limerick were too reliant on Danny Frewen and, while only a point separated the sides with five minutes remaining, Clare finished the stronger to earn home advantage for the semi-finals.
