Waterford gained their first Division 4 points with a three-goal victory over Carlow at Netwatch Cullen Park.

Waterford had the boost of a seventh-minute goal from left half-forward Patrick Hurney, who finished the game with a personal tally of 2-5.

Carlow hit a good patch, but trailed 1-5 to 0-7 at half-time. A Brian Murphy point three minutes after the resumption levelled matters, but Waterford were always able to find a response and Hurney quickly had them in front again from a free.

On 44 minutes, a cross from Gavin Crotty saw Hurney beat Carlow goalie Robbie Molloy to the ball and he had an empty goal to aim at.

Carlow kept coming back, but they continued to be punished.

Things got worse for Turlough O'Brien's side when Daniel St Ledger received a straight red card on 69 minutes.

Waterford closed out the game, their third goal coming in injury time from centre-forward Donie Breathnach.
