Westmeath's John Heslin scored eight points as UCD comfortably overcame Athlone IT at Belfield.

Most of the damage was done in the first half, with UCD going in at the break leading by 0-8 to 0-1 and, although Athlone battled on bravely, the hosts were stretched.

Westmeath's Ger Egan led the fight-back, kicking four points, but Athlone simply had no answer to UCD's power and pace.

Jack McCaffrey started at centre-forward for UCD and he was typically direct, scoring two points and constantly dragging defenders out of position.

UCD were five points up before Athlone got their first score on 16 minutes. They were unlucky when Michael Day's shot came back off the crossbar and, with a bit more composure, could have reduced the deficit before half-time.

McCaffrey fisted his second point soon after the break and further scores from wing-back Paraic Hanlon and Heslin put UCD in cruise control.
