Hewitt and Boland conquer Salesian
HS Clonmel 1-13
Salesian College 2-8
TIPPERARY side CBS High School Clonmel booked their place in the All-Ireland Colleges SFC 'B' final after overcoming the challenge from Salesian College Kildare at Carlow.
The Munster men were six points in arrears after just 13 minutes when two goals from Fergal Conway gave the Celbridge side the early edge.
However, the Clonmel outfit slowly pushed themselves back into contention as they held their Kildare rivals scoreless for the next 17 minutes of the game. The victors snuffed out the threat of Conway and their confidence grew when Liam Boland -- who bagged six points in total -- and Gerry Keegan reduced the margin with fine scores from play.
Clonmel were now on a role and took the lead for the first time when Bill Hewitt superbly rolled the ball past the hapless Shane McNamara to earn a 1-8 to 2-4 interval lead. Both of the goalkeepers had outstanding games with the alert Paul Nolan pulling off a flurry of fine saves from the talented Conway.
Salesian College tried to save the game in the last quarter and went in search of that all-important goal but it was to little avail as Clonmel ran out two-point winners.
