Herron helps Summerhill bridge 31-year gap for glory Connacht title
Summerhill Col 1-12 St Attracta's 0-13
Summerhill College became the first Sligo school to win the Connacht Senior A Championship since 1985 after a hard-fought defeat of Tubbercurry's St Attracta's Community School.
With two Yeats County schools contesting the final for the first time, the trophy was guaranteed to reside in Sligo, but it was the town outfit that claimed the bragging rights again, having also won the league final.
A tally of 1-6 from man of the match Cathal Herron proved crucial, with his fifth-minute goal putting his side into a lead they never surrendered.
St Attracta's were good value for the opening two scores from Nathan Mullen and Liam Gaughan, but after the goal in it took Conan Marren to get them back into contention.
He kicked two points at the end of the first half to leave the minimum between them at the break, 1-6 to 0-8, and added four more in the second half.
But with Sean Power outstanding, and Herron, Nathan Rooney and county senior player Kyle Cawley chipping in with scores, Summerhill remained on top to lift the trophy in front of a massive crowd.
