Hazard penalty save goes Down well
Down 2-13 Armagh 2-11
Armagh missed the chance to force extra time in yesterday's Ulster minor quarter-final, with Down goalkeeper Jack Hazard saving a penalty in the fifth minute of stoppage time.
James McCartan's Mourne side led from start to finish and full-forwards Liam Kerr and Conor McCrickard scored all but one of their total between them, McCrickard hitting 2-4.
But Armagh finished both halves strongly and almost took it to extra time when Conor Turbitt was pushed in the back by Hazard in the square.
The 'keeper made amends by saving Tiernan Kelly's penalty, putting Down through to a semi-final against Cavan.
Down got off to a dream start with an unanswered 1-4 in the opening 10 minutes. After Declan McClements nailed the opener in the third minute, Conor McCrickard was scorer-in-chief with 1-3 including two frees.
Liam Kerr's brace had Down 1-7 to 0-2 up after 23 minutes but Armagh reduced the half-time deficit to 1-7 to 0-6, Ross McQuillan Turbitt and Aodhan McEvoy scoring. Tiernan Kelly's fine 39th-minute goal left three between the teams and McQuillan palmed home to set up an exciting finish, but Down hung on.
