Hard-fought victory keeps Sligo in battle to avoid drop
Sligo 2-10 Wexford 1-8
Sligo's battle to avoid relegation continues thanks to a second successive win - a hard-fought five-point home defeat of Wexford.
There was another impressive turn from their young midfield of Cian Breheny, nephew of Sligo icon Eamonn O'Hara, and Sigerson Cup winner Niall Murphy.
Wexford, who have now lost four times in five outings, failed to make a player advantage count in the second period as their opponents were down a man late in the first half when Pat Hughes picked up a second booking.
But Sligo, who led 1-6 to 1-2 at the break having played with the breeze, never surrendered their lead and Mark Breheny's goal after 61 minutes ensured that the home side stayed on course for victory. Sligo, starting with the same 15 that thrashed Louth the Sunday before, glided into a 1-5 to 0-1 lead by the 22nd minute, with their goal coming via Adrian Marren's converted penalty.
Wexford who rarely threatened, woke up when Tiernan Rossiter goaled after 27 minutes following Ciaran Lyng's industry. Lyng, who contributed four points, curled over a fine pointed free just before the break to keep Wexford in contention.
