Going the extra miles for club

DEVOTION to club comes in many forms but one of the most heart-warming stories from this year's county final circuit arose from the return from Canada of Sarsfields stalwart Martin 'Ziggy' McIntyre for the Kildare football showpiece last Sunday.

A selector with 'The Sash' before he headed off to work in Canada a few months ago, he vowed to be back in St Conleth's Park on final day, assuming of course that Sarsfields qualified.

They not only made it to the final but won the title for the first time since 2005 and true to his word, 'Ziggy' was back on sideline duty for the big occasion.

Niall 'Nuxer' Buckley was another Sarsfields 'old boy' to return -- also from across the Atlantic but the United States in his case -- for the final, so he would have spotted the response to the question posed to captain Padraig Brennan in a programme piece: "If you had a choice of three dinner guests, who would they be?"

Answer: 'Nuxer' Buckley, 'Spike' Nolan and Pope Benedict.

Should be quite an evening.
