I grew up in the late 1980s and early ’90s. From the age of five or six I spent almost every day playing football or soccer in the front garden, on the street or on the astro pitch in the nearby secondary school.

I was lucky that our house was at the end of the terrace, meaning we had a gable wall facing into the garden against which I could kick for hours off my left and right without the need for someone to return a pass.
