'Ghost point' sparks row

BALLIVOR 1-15
ST FECHIN’S 1-8
(after extra time)

WHILE nowhere on the same scale as the infamous 2010 Leinster final, there was another Louth/Meath scoring controversy in Drogheda yesterday.

Trailing by four points with just over 10 minutes left, Ballivor kicked the last four points of a riveting contest and force extra-time.

However, the Meath champions' second-last score sparked a heated debate which continued long after they had pushed on in extra-time to seal a seven-point victory.

Richard Sherrock's effort did appear to sail harmlessly wide but the umpires signalled a point and, three minutes later, Adam Gannon stroked over a free to force extra-time.

Ballivor will point to an equally questionable first-half call that saw Eoghan Duffy appear to over-carry en route to a brilliant individual goal.

The strike helped St Fechin's to a 1-4 to 0-5 interval lead, but Ballivor came back, and Mairtin Doran's superb goal two minutes into extra-time put his side on course for victory.
