Gavin's Murchan masterstroke earns the Dublin boss EirGrid award for September
When defender Eoin Murchan won possession immediately from the restart of the second half in the All-Ireland football replay nobody could have anticipated what was about to happen. The 23-year-old Na Fianna man took off on a 70-metre run towards the Kerry end which ended with him scoring a spectacular goal.
It was hugely important as it gave Dublin a lead which they held throughout the second half. They extended it to six points to secure a win which earned them a place in history as the first team in football or hurling to win the All-Ireland senior championship title five times in-a-row.
Murchan had come on a sub in the drawn final, but Jim Gavin promoted him to the starting 15 for the replay.
It was an inspired managerial decision, as apart from scoring Dublin's only goal, Murchan played very well in a defensive role too and that earns Gavin the EirGrid Manager Moment of the Month for September, chosen by former Dublin football manager Paul Caffrey, former Tipperary hurling manager Michael Ryan, and Irish Independent GAA Editor Martin Breheny.
