Garda College score SEVEN goals in rout of Athlone IT
Garda College 7-10 Athlone IT 0-11
Garda College added their name to the list of potential Sigerson Cup contenders after they produced a stunning seven-goal attacking display to demolish Athlone IT at the home of the midland college tonight.
The Westmeath side went into the game as huge underdogs and while they competed well for primary possession in the early stages and looked sharp when they got the ball into their all-Longford inside line.
However, they simply had no answer to the Templemore students when forced to defend their high-powered running game.
Clare midfielder Ciarán Russell and the inside forward line of Declan Meehan, Jonathan Ryan and Tommy McDaniel were all on fire in the opening half as they posted five goals between them, building up a 5-8 to 0-5 interval lead.
That was nothing more than full value for the dominance that the Guards enjoyed.
A red card for Garda captain Killian Daly allowed Athlone IT to produce a much more solid display after the interval.
Late goals from Ryan and Eoin Cleary added further gloss to the scoreline in advance of their trip to the Mardyke to take on competition favourites UCC next Wednesday – at a venue to be confirmed.
