Longford cruised into the next stage of the qualifiers - despite a worrying wides tally in yesterday's win over Carlow.
A 10th-minute goal from David McGivney helped the visitors into a 1-5 to 0-5 interval lead at Netwatch Cullen Park and they kicked on in the second half as the home side failed to land a blow.
The creator of the three-pointer, right half-back Colm P Smyth, also scored a point in the first half, while left half-back Darren Quinn landed two points on the left as Longford threatened but never could overrun their opponents.
Diarmuid Walshe and Darragh Foley both scored two points each for Carlow with Jordan Morrissey also raising a white flag. They were unlucky not to have scored a goal themselves when Benny Kavanagh was denied by goalkeeper Paddy Collum. Another effort for a point also hit the post as the home side badly needed to find some momentum coming up to half-time.
The Midlanders dominated in the second half but shooting 18 wides kept Carlow in it. Going into the final quarter all the two sides had to show for their efforts was a miserly two points each. There was little to enthuse about.
Carlow were flat. The whole scenario which has seen their manager Turlough O'Brien and football coach Steve Poacher go through the appeals process after picking up suspensions in the league clearly had taken its toll.
A low-key Longford side just had to avoid any accidents to ensure they advanced. Diarmuid Walsh was Carlow's only scorer in the second half and with a minute to go the winners adorned their victory with a goal from raiding corner-back Patrick Fox.
