Supersub Jamsie Finnerty bagged two second-half goals as Ballintubber underlined the gulf in class over an inexperienced Aughawillan side in Carrick-on-Shannon.

The Leitrim underdogs were in the game at the break, trailing by just three points after an error-strewn first half, but the minnows were sblown away by the Mayo champions on the resumption.

Cillian O'Connor kicked two early frees but missed several other attempts as Ballintubber's finishing failed to reflect their dominance.

Aughawillan drew level with points from brothers Gary and Mark Plunkett but then a succession of poor passes gifted the Mayo men points, scored by Alan Plunkett (2) and O'Connor (free).

Ciaran Gilheaney replied with an excellent long-range point but Ballintubber kept their noses in front with scores from Damien Coleman, O'Connor (free) and Brian Walsh - despite points from Gary Plunkett and Pearse Dolan - to take a 0-8 to 0-5 lead into the interval.

Kicked on

And the favourites quickly kicked on with points from Alan Plunkett and two frees by O'Connor.

The outstanding performance of experienced midfielders Jason Gibbons and Diarmuid O'Connor underpinned Ballintubber's success as they overpowered the Aughawillan pairing of Gary Plunkett and Dolan.

The introduction of substitute Finnerty in the 42nd minute made an instant impact, with the forward finishing off a flowing move from close range for a goal that ended the game as a contest.

Despite chasing a lost cause, Aughawillan remained competitive to the end, and their hard-working efforts were rewarded with the final scores of the game - a Gary Plunkett point from play and a late consolation goal by Gilheaney.
