Dunne on the spot as unbeaten Breffni men secure promotion
Cavan 1-9 Longford 0-10
Cavan maintained their 100pc league record and in doing so secured promotion to Division 2 after defeating near neighbours Longford at Glennon Brothers Pearse Park.
The Ulster side enjoyed the lion's share of possession in the first half but failed to convert it into any major advantage. In fact, Longford stole the lead five minutes before the interval and held a two-point cushion thanks to four points from Sean McCormack.
Then Cavan's Kevin Tierney notched over two excellent points from acute positions. The Ulster side continued to pressurise Longford's rearguard and Martin Reilly scored a point in the 38th minute with a long-range effort off his right peg.
Despite losing Turloc Mooney to a second yellow-card offence in the 41st minute, Cavan once again regained the lead thanks to a well-taken penalty by Martin Dunne. Longford wasted that numerical advantage soon after when their wing-back Colm Smyth saw red for a late tackle on Reilly.
Growing with each passing move, the Breffni Men landed a series of white-flag efforts in the closing stages including an excellent point from Niall McDermott that consequently closed out any possibility of a Longford revival.
