Dubs star to face Irish sprint champion in midfield showdown
2013 Footballer of the Year Michael Darragh MacAuley will come up an altogether new challenge in midfield when he lines up against former Irish sprinter David Gillick in club action.
The all-action midfielder has continued his form of last season into the early stages of this year’s championship, but when he lines out in his club colours of Ballyboden St. Endas next, he will pit his wits against one of Ireland’s most successful sprinters.
Gillick, winner of the 400m European Indoor Championship in 2005 and 2007, resumed his Gaelic football career this season with Ballinteer St. Johns and will come face-to-face with MacAuley when both clubs lock horns in the Dublin championship.
“My first competitive game was against O'Tooles in the Dublin senior championship and we won well," the 30 year-old told The Irish Daily Star.
“I've been playing away in the middle. I haven't marked any county players yet but we have Ballyboden in the next round of the championship,” he added.
“So I'll be up against Michael Darragh MacAuley - and he's got quite an engine! It's great that I'm playing at this level and can come up against guys like that.”
