THE former Dublin gaelic football star Jason Sherlock has announced his retirement from the game.

Sherlock burst on the scene as a precocious talent in 1995 as Dublin won the All-Ireland title for the first time in 12 years.

He played his last game for the county in 2010 but had continued to play for his club St Oliver Plunketts Eoghan Ruadh.

However, they were surprisingly beaten by Ballinteer St John’s in the first round of the club championship, a game that will now be remembered as the 37-year-old’s final match.

“I’ve decided to call it a day,” he said in his newspaper column today. “I’ve played my last game of football. It’s not a decision I’ve taken lightly and I know becoming an ‘ex-footballer’ won’t be easy.

"I’ve found the last few years when I haven’t been playing for Dublin pretty challenging.”
