Downey's double fires Down past Saints
Down 3-20 St Mary's 2-14
Three second-half goals for Down saw them rout St Mary's in Newry as they collected their opening win under new manager Eamonn Burns in their final Dr McKenna Cup tie in Pairc Esler.
Trailing 0-11 to 0-10 at the break in a high -scoring affair played in cold conditions, Packie Downey came off the bench to score two late goals after fellow sub Cathal Doyle had set the Mournemen on their way to victory when he found the net on 49 minutes.
Arthur McConville was the man of the match for the hosts, hitting six points in a superb display, while his Clonduff team-mate Barry O'Hagan was on the mark with three points. Down did have Mark McKay black-carded just before the break but it mattered little as his replacement Doyle took less than 15 minutes of the second period to find the back of the net.
Although Aidan McGarrity and Niall Toner did goal for the students in the second period, it was never enough as Burns emptied his bench to score further points from Darragh O'Hanlon, Caolan Mooney and Ryan Mallon.
