Down rounded off their McKenna Cup campaign with a first win of the competition in the final game as they easily saw off the challenge of UUJ at Burren yesterday.

It was comfortable throughout for Eamonn Burns' men who held the upper hand having scored the first four points without reply through Sean Dornan, Aaron Morgan, Shay Millar and Shane Murray.

While Eoin McHugh rattled the post at the other end for the students and Niall Madine opened their account, Down got their goal 22 minutes in when Murray sped forward before offloading to Connaire Harrison, who produced a stunning finish past Sean Fox into the top corner.

While the Jordanstown men did come back with points from Madine, they still trailed 1-7 to 0-4 at the break and, despite a flurry of attacks in the third quarter, UUJ couldn't overcome the deficit from the early stages.

As the tie entered its final 15 minutes, Harrison spurned two glorious goal chances for Down, but they didn't need them as they hit the final five points without reply to extend the lead to eight.
