Donnellys make Tyrone success a family affair

TYRONE bounced back from their Ulster championship loss to Armagh with a comprehensive victory against Leitrim in yesterday's TG4 All-Ireland Ladies Senior Football Championship round-one qualifier at Shannon Gaels, Cavan.

Tyrone, provincial champions in 2009, beat the Westerners 6-22 to 2-9 as cousins Lynda and Cathy Donnelly scored four goals between them.

Cathy scored 3-6 while Lynda netted in the 25th minute as Tyrone, beaten All-Ireland quarter-finalists last year, went on a goal spree.

At half-time, Leitrim found themselves 4-12 to 1-4 in arrears as Cathy Donnelly hit two first-half goals, with Lynda Donnelly and Aisling O'Kane also finding the net.

Two minutes into the second half, Cathy Donnelly completed her hat-trick of goals before O'Kane, who contributed 2-3 in total, scored her second goal in the 52nd minute.

Leitrim's Aine Tighe, who finished with 1-4, scored a 38th-minute goal while Eimear McGlade hit their first-half goal in the 20th minute.

Tyrone will be joined in the round-two qualifier draw by Kildare, who cruised to a comfortable 4-12 to 1-9 victory against Down at Fingallians, Swords, on Saturday.

After a tight opening, Kildare moved 3-5 to 0-6 clear at half time before Siobhan Hurley bagged a fourth goal for the Lilywhites early in the second half.

Down's consolation goal came with the last kick of the game as Emma Mulhern converted a penalty.

Today, the remaining round-one qualifiers are down for decision as Kerry take on Mayo in Banagher (2.30) while Tipperary and Meath battle it out at the same venue later in the afternoon (4.15). Both games will be televised live on TG4.
