Donnellan denies Sligo in exciting finish

Last year's defeated finalists NUI Maynooth saw off a dogged IT Sligo in testing conditions in Maynooth.

The sides exchanged points in the opening minutes with a couple of Stephen Coen efforts matched by Peadar Og Griofa and Jamie Gonoud.

Full-forward Sean Hurley blasted to the back of the net to give the hosts a four-point advantage, but IT Sligo hit back instantly and a Coen point was followed quickly by a cracking goal from wing forward Gary Whyte to level matters.

Whyte then chipped over a point to edge the visitors in front, but Kennedy, O Griofa with a brace, and Gonoud, responded to leave NUI Maynooth 1-7 to 1-4 ahead at the interval.

In the second half, NUI Maynooth managed to hit two valuable points through Seamus Mattimoe and Hurley to leave them four points clear with five minutes remaining.

NUI Maynooth's Mark Donnellan denied Joe Rodgers a winning goal at the expense of a point, but it was enough to hand Maynooth victory and a place in the next round.
