Dublin survived the fourth minute dismissal on a black card of star man Con O’Callaghan to move past the challenge of a lack lustre Donegal and into the Under-21 All-Ireland final in a fortnight’s time.

Declan Bonner’s side went into the game as clear favourites, but having played their Ulster final just last Monday night, they struggled to get going.

Sean McMahon’s goal for Dublin on 50 minutes sealed the win but in reality the game was already out of Donegal’s reach at that stage. Dessie Farrell’s side led 0-10 to 0-5 before his strike and looked to be well on their way to a fourth All-Ireland final at this grade since 2010.

Despite O’Callaghan’s dismissal, Dublin made the brighter start and scored the first four points of the day.

Dublin were playing Donegal at their own game and flooding numbers back before breaking smartly at pace with Glenn O’Reilly managing two fine points.

It took a full 25 minutes before Donegal opened their account through a Michael Langan free. And their first from play came on the 30 minute mark as Michael Carroll pointed to see Dublin take a 0-5 to 0-2 lead in at the break.

Donegal made a bright start to the second half and landed the first two points but that was as good as it got as Dublin gradually pulled away thanks in no small part to Aaron Byrne, who led the line brilliantly in O’Callaghan’s absence.

Dublin finished the game with 14 men after Tony O’Sullivan was shown a black card in injury time but Dublin couldn’t replace him having used all their subs.
