A WELL-TAKEN goal from Jason Doherty proved decisive for the students of NUI Galway in atrocious conditions at the centre of excellence in Ballyhaunis last night.
So strong was the wind, players had to keep a hand on the ball for a colleague to take a free.
NUIG corner-forward Neil Douglas got the opening score inside a minute, but Sligo were strong on the ball playing into the teeth of that gale, producing two good scores from Stephen Coen and Pat Hughes.
However, Galway battled back and further scores, including Doherty's goal, gave the students an interval lead of 1-3 to 0-2.
Sligo came back with two early points in the second half from Stephen Kilcoyne and Stephen Coen, but a better drilled Galway side nailed three points into the wind, with Doherty, Stephen Guing and Douglas all on target.
