Dineen drives Rossies on

Roscommon 1-17 Cavan 1-12

Roscommon recovered from a poor start to get the better of a dogged Cavan side at Dr Hyde Park yesterday.

The visitors, inspired by David Givney's early goal, raced into a 1-4 to 0-1 lead inside the opening six minutes.

However, Des Newton's charges, driven forward by wing-back Cathal Dineen, dominated the remainder of the half. Donal Shine kicked six points, five from frees, to leave the sides level at the break on a 0-10 to 1-7 scoreline.

Once again Cavan exploded from the blocks with two points inside the opening minute of the second half, but a scrappy goal from substitute David O'Gara in the 37th minute settled Roscommon nerves once again.

Martin Dunne's accuracy had the sides level by the 48th minute but Cavan wouldn't score again.

There was never any doubt about the result when another substitute, Kevin Higgins, kicked three points from play to leave Roscommon third in the table.
