Deise denied by late Burns frees
Louth 1-10 Waterford 1-9
Louth chiselled out their first away league win in three years at a stormy Carriganore as substitute Ryan Burns popped up with two late frees to deny Waterford.
Derek Maguire's fifth minute goal helped Louth forge 1-7 to 0-4 ahead but Colin Kelly's side surrendered a six-point lead. They also lost Conor Grimes to a straight red card in the second half, but they displayed battling qualities and finished with a flourish.
Kelly heaped praise on his match-winner as the Wee County stay top of Division 4 he said: "He's quality and that's what he does. It's not easy in those situations, but I would have an expectancy that he can deliver under that type of pressure. His skill set is high."
The Deise looked set to collect the points when Gavin Crotty converted a penalty on 63 minutes. Black cards for Donie Breathnach, JJ Hutchinson and Darren Guiry wounded them, however, as they tried to protect a narrow advantage. "It isn't over until the fat lady sings," reflected manager Tom McGlinchey. "We just didn't hold out with the added four minutes."
Referee Michael Collins blew for 26 frees in the first half while also issuing four yellow cards, four black cards and one red.
