Davey the hero for Sligo

Sligo 1-14
Louth 2-10

Wing-back Johnny Davey proved the matchwinner for 14-man Sligo as his late point earned their first league win of the season yesterday.

The defender drove forward to kick the clinching score at Markievicz Park, after Louth had come from seven points down early in the second half to edge ahead for only the second time with just five minutes remaining.

A converted penalty from Louth's JP Rooney, added to Adrian Marren's sending-off for an off-the-ball incident, helped push the in-form Leinster men into a 2-10 to 1-12 lead, before late scores from Stephen Coen and Davey secured the two points for the home side.

Marren robbed goalkeeper Neil Gallagher and squeezed the ball into the net for the game's opening goal on the half-hour mark.

Sligo opened up a six-point gap by the break, 1-9 to 0-6, and further scores from Marren and the excellent Alan Costello extended this lead early in the second half.

Louth got back into contention on 51 minutes, when Colm Judge finished to the net after taking a pass from Rooney.

Rooney sandwiched a superb score from Sligo substitute Sean Davey with a point from play and a goal from the penalty spot as Louth took control late on, but Coen and Davey rescued the win for Kevin Walsh's side.
