Cursed Banner draw little comfort

SO, you make your own luck -- well try telling that to Clare, who are entitled to feel that they must have annoyed black cats after breaking mirrors while walking under ladders.

The Banner footballers drew All-Ireland champions Cork in the Munster first round and had to travel to Pairc Ui Chaoimh. Beaten convincingly, they looked ahead to the qualifiers where Down and Monaghan, both of whom were in Division 1 last spring, were the two to avoid.

Even then, Monaghan would be the preferred choice, but Clare drew Down, leaving them facing the All-Ireland runners-up five weeks after playing the champions.

On to the hurlers, who also drew the All-Ireland champions, Tipperary, in Munster. In the qualifiers they could have drawn Galway or Wexford, with the latter their first choice. Sorry, it's Galway and, what's more, Clare have to travel to Pearse Stadium.

Not exactly lucky, those Banner boys, now are they?
