Cross set for battle without captain Kernan as final appeal turned down

CROSSMAGLEN will go into battle today without captain Stephen Kernan after an 11th-hour bid to have his suspension lifted failed.

Kernan had a hearing with the Disputes Resolution Authority (DRA) on Thursday night but was not successful in getting the match ban he picked up in the semi-final lifted and will have to sit out today's All-Ireland Club Football Championship final, in which reigning champions Crossmaglen take on Garrycastle in a bid to take their title tally to six, one behind record winners Nemo Rangers.

Elsewhere, the Down footballers, who beat Mayo last weekend, have Benny Coulter and Kevin McKernan back in their starters for tomorrow's Division 1 clash with Dublin in Newry and Dan Gordon is listed at centre-back.

Waterford hurlers will be without the injured Paudie Mahony but have Shane O'Sullivan and Shane Walsh back for their meeting with Tipperary -- captain Michael 'Brick' Walsh is named at midfield. Limerick hurlers are still without the injured Declan Hannon and Kevin Downes and have named the same team that beat Laois to face Wexford tomorrow.

Former Wexford goalkeeping star Damien Fitzhenry and his family were among those honoured by the GAA's President's Awards in Croke Park last night. The Fitzhenrys were awarded with the 'Dermot Earley Family Award' -- all but two of the family's 15 children have lined out for the Duffry Rovers club and a number of them also played hurling and football for the county.

The President's awards honour excellence through volunteerism and all of last night's winners will be introduced to the crowd during today's club finals.
