Corey brothers ready to go head-to-head
Two brothers will find themselves in opposite corners on Saturday when the Ulster Senior Football Championship moves up another gear with the meeting of great rivals Cavan and Monaghan at Kingspan Breffni (7.0pm).
While Vinny Corey will be doing his best to prop up the Monaghan defence, his brother Martin will have an important role in Mickey Graham's Cavan management team.
Vinny has been an ever-present in recent years for Monaghan and won Ulster Championship medals in 2013 and 2015. His defensive skills, allied to his counter-attacking ability, have helped to make him a key member of manager Malachy O'Rourke's team. Martin, meanwhile, is credited with bringing an extra dimension to Cavan's overall strategy for a game which manager Graham is particularly keen to win.
"Both teams know each other so well and this is going to be a mouth-watering clash," insisted Graham. "We as management learned a lot about the players we have during the league in which we gave lots of players their debuts. Nearly every game in Division 1 was like a championship tie for us, so from that point of view we got great preparation for this match against Monaghan."
Former Monaghan player Dick Clerkin, who won Ulster medals in 2013 and 2015, admits he is "nervous" about the team's mission on Saturday.
"I think Cavan will be ready for us and I would be nervous about the game," admitted Clerkin. "There is always very little between the teams and both will be very keen to come out on top."
