Conroy proves cut above for St James

St James 0-14
Strokestown 1-9
Connacht Club IFC Final

Galway star Paul Conroy produced a superb display as St James captured their first provincial title at Tuam Stadium.

Midfielder Conroy hit four points to thwart a Strokestown side who were relegated from senior in Roscommon last year.

James were in control from early on and held a five-point lead by the 14th minute, before John Rogers registered a first score for the Roscommon champions.

But a further three scores from St James put them in control, with Galway senior Eoin Concannon pointing with a free and from play.

Strokestown were handed a lifeline four minutes before half-time when Conor Silke crashed a penalty to the net, but another two points from Concannon and Conroy left it 0-10 to 1-2 at the break.

Coman Shiel rang the changes for Strokestown and new arrivals Niall Brogan and Emmett Collins immediately kicked points after their introduction to close the gap to three points.

Concannon and O'Connell hit back for St James, but Strokestown hit four without reply to get to within a point.

But man-of-the-match Conroy settled James' nerves with two late points to claim the title for the city club.
