Cavan chalked up their first win in this year's Football League Division 2 with a battling second-half display in a thrilling local derby duel at Kingspan Breffni Park on Saturday.

The Ulstermen played second fiddle in the first half and were 0-3 to 0-8 adrift at the break.

However, they ignited a sterling fightback with an unanswered five-point tally at the start of the second half and sealed an unlikely victory when sub Christopher Conroy's fisted effort was deflected into the Westmeath net in the 72nd minute.

The visitors enjoyed a numerical advantage from the 25th minute to the 66th minute - when corner-back Paddy Meade received a straight red card for an off-the-ball tackle, but they couldn't make that advantage count as Cavan's collective strength proved decisive with 13 of their number getting on the scoresheet.

Westmeath had led their hosts a merry dance in the opening quarter and were full value for their 0-6 to 0-1 lead after 18 minutes.

And things went from bad to worse for the home side when Meade was handed his marching orders.

But Cavan were a transformed outfit on the restart and half-time subs Thomas Galligan and Stephen Murray both pointed as they levelled matters, 0-8 apiece, after 42 minutes.

Westmeath hit back with interest though with Loughlin goaling in the 42nd minute with his first touch of the ball at the end of Westmeath's first attack of the second half.

John Heslin was red carded towards the end to leave Cavan in the box seat, and the finishing score came two minutes into injury-time when Conroy goaled.

Scorers - Cavan: C Brady 0-4; C Conroy 1-0; T Galligan, R Galligan (2'45s) 0-2 each; O Pierson (f), K Brady, J Smith, S Murray, P Faulkner, E Doughty, G McKiernan, O Kiernan, R Connolly 0-1 each. Westmeath: L Loughlin 1-3; J Heslin (4f) 0-4; R Connellan 0-2; R O'Toole, C McCormack, J Smith, L Dolan 0-1 each.
