Monaghan made numerical advantage count to to see off 13 man Mayo in front of 7,346 in sunny Clones.

The home side led by just two points in what had been a nip and tuck game but immediately after Jordan Flynn's dismissal on 62 minutes for a second yellow card offence, the home side grabbed their second goal when Kieran Duffy palmed home a Kieran Hughes centre.

After the Flynn red card, Monaghan outscored James Horan's side by 1-5 to 0-1 down the home straight and things got even worse for Mayo when Padraig O'Hora was also sent to the line deep in injury time.

The sides were well matched in the first half. Mayo kicked the first two points of the game and made much of the early running with Ryan O'Donoghue, Padraig O'Hora and Jordan Flynn all kicking early points.

However when Conor McCarthy goaled on 26 minutes it pushed the home side in front. With referee Anthony Nolan playing advantage for a foul, the Scotstown man wriggled away from three Mayo defenders and blasted past Rob Hennelly to put his side in the lead for the first time. A Rory Beggan effort from a free put Monaghan two to the good but Mayo finished the half as they started it, by kicking two points on the bounce. Darren Coen's second point and a free from Diarmuid O'Connor ensured the sides went in level at the break (1-5 to 0-8).

The second half was similarly tight and Monaghan held a slim advantage when Flynn was shown his second yellow card. And from there, Seamus McEnaney’s men left no doubt and picked up their second win of the campaign.
