The honours were shared on Saturday at Cusack Park, Ennis when Clare and Cavan played out a draw in their opening clash of the campaign.

It took a last-gasp pointed free in injury-time by Cavan full-forward Bryan Magee to tie the game. Yet Clare will feel that they let this one slip and manager Colm Collins said as much afterwards.

"We let them (Cavan) back into the game when we should have had them dead and buried," said Collins (above). "We made simple little mistakes. When you are playing Division 2 football and aspiring to play better, you can't get away with those kind of things."

With the aid of a strong breeze, the Banner men led by 1-7 to 1-2 at half-time and within two minutes of the restart had increased their lead to seven points. Cavan grabbed the opening score of the tie, a goal by Caoimhín O'Reilly, after just 50 seconds.

But when Clare goaled through Eimhin Courtney on 12 minutes, it put the Banner 1-3 to 1-1 in front and they never looked back until the break. Midway through the second half Cavan struck gold, striking 1-2 without reply in a two-minute spell.

Dara McVeety grabbed the all-important goal. They now trailed by just one at 1-10 to 2-6. The Breffni men then took the lead when Oisín Kiernan pointed with three on the clock.

But the home side regained the lead with points by Eoin Cleary and Keelan Sexton only for Magee to tie it up at the death - much to the relief of Cavan manager Mattie McGleenan, who was buoyed by the collective heart of the 10 new debutants.

"We are delighted with these young boys coming into the squad and they bring a real energy to the squad," said the Breffni boss. "I'm not sure statistically but we must have kicked three or four into the goalkeeper's hands.

"What we are trying to teach them is that if you put the ball dead it gives us a chance to get organised."
