Coen helps Mayo champions dig deep for provincial glory
Hollymount/C'more 0-9 Maigh Cuilinn 0-8
Connacht iFC final Hollymount/Carramore survived a spirited comeback from Maigh Cuilinn to win their first Connacht intermediate crown at Pearse Stadium.
This was a team effort from the Mayo champions, who were made to work after the break despite their two-point lead going into a second-half where they played with a massive breeze behind them.
Tom Connelly's men led 0-6 to 0-4 at half-time after they imposed themselves on Maigh Cuilinn, and justified captain Darren Coen's decision to play against the breeze in the first-half.
It took a fantastic Seamus Ó Frigil save from Darren Coen to deny the Mayo champions a goal early on, but a Peadar Ó Cuaig free gave Maigh Cuilinn a two-point lead after seven minutes.
However, they only hit one more score in the first-half, a Daith Ó Gaoithin free, as they succumbed to the Hollymount/Carramore onslaught.
Corner-forward Damien Kelly was proving a menace, kicking two good points, Ian Costello did likewise while Darren Coen added to his tally, as Hollymount/Carramore took a strong lead into the break. Darren Coen kicked the first couple of scores at the start of the second-half, but then Ó Cuaig led the Maigh Cuilinn charge with three-in-a-row from frees.
However, Kevin Feerick settled Hollymount/Carramore, and despite Gearoid Braidseach's late free, Maigh Cuilinn couldn't pull off the miracle comeback, and become the first team to win two Connacht intermediate titles.
