Pobalscoil Chorca Dhuibhne made it back-to-back Hogan Cup wins after keeping their nerve in the final ten minutes to see off a gutsy Roscommon CBS side.

The Connacht champions looked like they might have chinned the Kerry school when Conor Shanagher grabbed his second goal of the game on 52 minutes to put his side one point to the good.

However, PCD showed all their experience and levelled almost immediately through Cathal O Bambaire and from there they never looked back as some nerveless place kicking from Seamus O Muircheartaigh and Conchuir O Geibheannaigh saw them take a deserved second All-Ireland title on bounce.

The first half was notable for its cagey nature. Roscommon had kept their concession rate low in the championship and they immediately funnelled men back to shut down the Kerry men.

To their credit, they committed numbers in attack too but they coughed up a rare goal on 16 minutes when some quick hands and slick passing saw O Geibheannaigh put Sean O Gairbha in the clear and he made no mistake from close range.

That score made Roscommon come out and play a bit more and they quickly set about reeling in their four point deficit.

Noel Gately pointed before the impressive Richard Hughes added his second score of the half. O Geibheannaigh replied for the Kerry school to leave a goal in it.

The Roscommon town side pulled level just before half-time when they attacked swiftly off a Chorca Dhuibhne turnover. Hughes and Gately combined to put full forward Shanagher away and he kept calm to bring the sides level at 1-3 apiece in what was the last score of the half.

PCD had the better of much of the second half but their shooting, under severe pressure from Roscommon’s massed defence, saw them hit 14 wides over the hour.

And while Roscommon took the lead inside the final ten minutes after Shanagher’s second goal, PCD had enough composure to get by and become the first side to retain the Hogan Cup since St Colman’s, Newry in 2011.
