Carlow leave it late to see off Kerry men
IT Carlow 0-10 IT Tralee 0-7
IT Carlow fired three unanswered points in the closing 10 minutes to carve out a 0-10 to 0-7 win over IT Tralee in the Independent.ie Sigerson Cup in Tralee this afternoon.
Managed by former Laois player Noel Garvan, a trio of late points from Laois’s Tom Shiel, Meath's Eoin Lynch and Tipperary’s Liam Boland handed the visitors a first win in the competition since 2011.
This victory also ensures an away quarter-final date with the winners of this evening’s clash of Maynooth University and UL (Maynooth 6pm).
Defences were on top for large parts of the opening half, and IT Tralee moved 0-3 to 0-1 ahead after just 10 minutes thanks to a brace of Jack Savage points from play.
The Kerry Senior and Under 21 player also added a pointed free in those opening minutes, as the hosts began strongly.
But IT Carlow came storming back to level the contest, while Savage claimed his fourth point, as the sides entered half-time dead-locked at 0-4 apiece.
Galway's Barry McHugh with three of his four points, including two from frees, with Boland also on target during an entertaining opening half.
Little separated the IT’s in the third quarter, with not more than a point between them during this spell.
Savage continued to add to the hosts tally, and indeed registered all of their seven points over the hour.
Level at 0-7 apiece entering the final 10 minutes it looked like extra-time would be on the cards, but IT Carlow worked hard to take a three-point victory, with a trio of unanswered scores in the closing six minutes.
IT Tralee’s wait for a win in the Independent.ie Sigerson Cup continues. The last victory for the Kerry college was in 2008 over NUI Maynooth.
Scorers for IT Carlow: Barry McHugh, Liam Boland 0-4 each; Tom Shiels, Eoin Lynch 0-1 each.
Scorers for IT Tralee: Jack Savage (4f) 0-7.
