Carey punishes poor Monaghan
Monaghan 2-20 Antrim 0-9
Monaghan's footballers cemented their place at the top of Section B of the McKenna Cup with a 17-point win over Antrim at Glenavy yesterday.
A goal from Colin Walshe helped Monaghan to a 1-9 to 0-3 half-time lead and when Shane Carey slotted home a penalty late in the second-half, many of the home fans had already gone.
Michael Bannigan opened the scoring for the visitors in the second minute and they were never behind. Antrim launched a mini-revival after the restart, scoring the opening three points, but normal service resumed and in a 15-minute spell Monaghan outscored their hosts by 0-7 to 0-1 to lead by 1-18 to 0-8. Shane Carey then converted his penalty to stretch the lead to 16 points. Niall McKeown saw red late on for a second offence.
