Wexford secured a crucial win over Sligo at Wexford Park to ease the pressure on manager Aidan O'Brien.

A win in their opening game was followed by three successive defeats, which had left them in danger of relegation, but a hard-earned two points from this game will have eased their worries, while for Sligo it was a game they always struggled in.

Wexford were encouraged by an early flourish of scores, with Conor Carty pointing them ahead after 60 seconds, while three minutes later Michael O'Regan linked up with PJ Banville to crash home a fine goal. After Ciaran Lyng added further points, the home side, having looked comfortable, suddenly lost their way and David Kelly and Adrian Marren responded with Sligo points.

Sligo then had the misfortune to see Marren's 17th-minute penalty excellently saved by Shane Roche, but they still responded with a fine Pat Hughes goal on 20 minutes. However, Wexford finished the half strongly with points from Daithi Waters, O'Regan and Lyng to lead 1-6 to 1-3 at the interval.

After the restart, it was Wexford who took the initiative, despite playing into the breeze. They increased their lead through Kevin O'Grady and Ben Brosnan. Although Sligo hung in through Mark Breheny and Marren, a delightful Ben Brosnan goal after 52 minutes clinched the points.
