Brosna survive late fightback to lift Junior title
Brosna 0-8 John Mitchels 0-5
BROSNA continued Kerry's stranglehold of the All-Ireland Junior Club Football Championship when they dominated Liverpool side John Mitchels in a low-scoring contest at Croke Park on Saturday.
Kerry teams had won five of the seven All-Ireland junior finals they contested since 2004, and Brosna laid the foundations for this historic win with some staunch defending from Eamon Kiely, Aaron Cahill, Flor McAuliffe and Michael Murphy, until he was black-carded in the 27th minute.
Brosna's Tom McGoldrick opened the scoring from a free and then Adam Barry kicked a beauty from play as Mitchels struggled to breach the Brosna rearguard.
Mitchels can thank their full-back Paraic McGuirk for keeping the Kerry team at bay as he did his best with some timely clearances but once Kieran Lynam opened their account in the 27th minute, it was a signal for Brosna to tag on two late points from Mike Finnegan and Dave Curtin which gave them a 0-5 to 0-1 lead at the interval.
John Mitchels resumed with fresh impetus and added two quick points from Francis Cassidy and Michael Molloy to close the gap to just two, but Brosna were not going to be denied with Adam Barry adding two second-half points to increase Brosna's lead to four again.
However, the Liverpool side staged a late rally through points from Conal McGlade and John McDermott, before Michael Finnegan made sure Brosna maintained a strong Kingdom tradition.
