Carlow footballers reeled off their fifth successive league win with a comfortable eight point victory over neighbours Wicklow last night to keep Turlough O'Brien's side as strong contenders to gain promotion to Division 3 of the NFL.

The Barrowsiders were never headed after right half back Jordan Morrissley pointed them in front in the 1st minute.

With the home county 0-6 to 0-4 in front on 22 minutes, a short Wicklow kick-out which went astray was swooped on by the Carlow attack and Darragh Foley set up the inrushing Paul Broderick for the game's only goal as O'Brien's men went on to lead 1-8 to 0-7 at the break.

Mark Jackson, the Wicklow goalie kicked three long-range points, one from a 45 and two from frees and was to emerge as his side's top scorer with 0-5 from placed balls.

Brendan Murphy and Sean Murphy gave Carlow midfield superiority and, with a good supply of ball, the home forwards kept the scoreboard ticking over throughout the second half.

Scorers - Carlow: P Broderick 1-7 (0-5f), D Foley 0-3 (0-1f), S Murphy 0-2, J Morrissey, B Murphy, E Ruth, S Gannon 0-1 each. Wicklow: M Jackson 0-5 (0-4f, 0-1 45), D Hayden 0-4 (0-3f), J Stafford, R O'Brien, J Crowe 0-1 each.
