Bennett's show-stopper propels Blackwater to first title
Blackwater CS 0-11 Dungarvan CBS 0-8
Waterford minor Stephen Bennett stole the show at Fraher Field as his 10-point total delivered a first Dean Ryan Cup for Blackwater CS.
In a scrappy encounter dominated by frees, the Lismore school held a slender advantage of 0-5 to 0-4 at the interval, with Bennett landing all five of Blackwater's first-half tally. At the other end, Patrick Curran was also Dungarvan's sole scorer.
Bennett found his range again early in the second half but Cormac Curran responded from play to leave only a point between the teams again.
Blackwater reeled off three points without reply from Bennett (two) and Shane Murray. Two missed frees proved costly for Dungarvan, although they did reduce the deficit to two with a pair of Cormac Curran frees.
Bennett again came up trumps for Blackwater in the closing minutes with a free and a '65' to restore their four-point cushion. Patrick Curran left only a goal separating the teams on 58 minutes but Blackwater stood firm in defence to secure a historic triumph.
