The green light has been given for Austin Stack Park to be relocated to Tralee Racecourse.

An Bord Pleanala has granted permission for the redevelopment of the existing Austin Stack Park into a shopping centre and apartments and the relocation of Stack Park to the Ballybeggan racecourse, subject to some revised conditions.

The move is ambitious in the current economic climate, but has been welcomed by Kerry GAA officials, who are also planning an academy at Currans, a development that is also the subject of a future decision by An Bord Pleanala.

Kerry County Board vice-chairman Patrick O'Sullivan, who has been overseeing the project on behalf of the board, has welcomed the news.

"It is great news for the Kerry County Board, for the people of Kerry and the town of Tralee," he said.

"We will soon have a modern and state-of-the-art stadium for the people of Kerry and for Tralee. As well as a stadium, we will have modern offices for the board, whose workload is increasing by the day.

"Fitzgerald Stadium is also being revamped with new dressing rooms being built, and the builders are right on schedule... It will be all systems go for our potential Munster semi-final meeting with Cork on June 7."
