Kieran Martin, Athlone IT, in action against Gary O'Donoghue, Trinity College

Athlone IT overpowered Trinity in this preliminary-round tie to set up a first-round meeting with UCD.

Paul McPadden scored seven points for Trinity but they were always playing catch-up after a blistering start by Athlone, who went 2-2 to 0-2 up inside 10 minutes, with goals from Cillian Fitzgerald and Kieran Kilcline - a superb solo effort.

Athlone maintained that six-point lead to the break and it could have been more but for two outstanding saves from Ross O'Hanlon.

Early in the second half, Kieran Martin's freak goal from a '45' that drifted over O'Hanlon's head put Athlone 10 points ahead and settled the issue.
