EirGrid to be unveiled as International Rules sponsors
EirGrid will sponsor the 2015 International Rules Test between Ireland and Australia which will be played later this year, the Irish Independent has learned.
The state-owned firm have taken on the sponsorship for an initial one-year term though that could be extended after this year's Test which takes place in Croke Park on October 21.
It's the second major GAA sponsorship the company have announced, having previously lent their name to the All-Ireland U-21 football championship.
The 2002 Armagh All-Ireland-winning manager Joe Kernan take charge of the International Rules side that will take on the Australian selection with legends Pádraic Joyce, Darragh ó Sé and Dermot Earley making up his heavyweight backroom team.
Ireland are out to regain the Cormac McAnallen trophy, having lost the Test in Perth last November.
Once again Australia will consider only players who have won All-Australian awards, the equivalent of the GAA's All Stars, for selection.
Elsewhere, John Brudair has been granted a two-year extension as manager of the Limerick footballers.
His two-year term came to an end after their defeat to Tyrone in the back door but he will remain in place until 2017 with a review at the end of next year's championship.
